Clear or White Quartz is the 2nd most abundant mineral in Earths continental crust. Quartz has piezoelectric properties, which means when put under pressure it generates electricity.
It is widely used in watches, electronics, optics and jewelry. Also used in glass, ceramics and abrasives.
Quartz is rather hard and durable rating a 7 on the MOHS scale. Diamonds rate a 10.

Abalone is harvested and eaten in many cultures. The swirling color of abalone comes from the inner shell of a sea snail. This snail makes a nacre adding aragonite platelets to it in layers making it harder and more colorful than other types of Mother of Pearl.
